# 2: VENICE FILM LOCATIONS / DON'T LOOK NOW (1973):
Nicholas Roeg's 1973 film
Don't Look Now charts the Venetian misadventures of the Baxter's (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) following the death of their young daughter, who drowns in a pond at their English home. The film is renowned for its shots of an eerie, out-of-season, Venice and ranks highly on the BFI's list of top British Films. It is now best remembered for the mysterious figure in the red coat. Certain key locations in the film are detailed below and traced to their present day sites in Venice:

Location 1 / Ristorante Roma:
The film's first scene in Venice takes place inside the Risorante Roma, where the Baxter's first encounter the two elderly sisters (one of whom is blind and psychic). Laura (Christie) dramatically faints after a conversation with the psychic sister and is taken away from the Restaurant by water ambulance.
Location 2 / Hotel Gabrielli Sandwirth:
The Baxter's stay at the fictional 'Europa Hotel' while in Venice, and it is in the process of closing for the winter season throughout the film. The exterior and lobby shots of the 'Europa' use the Hotel Gabrielli Sandwirth, located on the front of the Grand Canal a few hundred meters from St. Mark's Square.
Location 3 / Hotel Bauer Grunwald:
The interior shots of the 'Europa Hotel' were filmed in the Hotel Bauer Grunwald just to the west of St. Mark's Square. These include the film's famous sex-scene.
Location 4 / Church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli:
The purpose of the Baxters' sojourn in Venice is John's (Sutherland's) restoration of the church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli, part of his work as an architect. The church is the site of John's dramatic fall from the scaffolding which occurs while he is inspecting a mosaic. The church underwent a real restoration in the early 1970s and is located in a less idyllic, more industrial region of Venice's south west tip.
Location 5 / Miracoli Church:
John and Bishop Barbarrigo (who oversees the restoration work), encounter a body being pulled from the canal by the police, which introduces the subplot involving a serial killer who is on the loose in Venice during the Baxter's stay. On his way back to the hotel John is seen walking past the famous Miracoli church.
Location 6 / Ponte Vinante:
John Baxter visits a police inspector after he is sure he sees Laura on the canal after she was supposed to have left for England, believing that she had been kidnapped by the two elderly sisters. Upon leaving the police station he goes in search of the sisters' hotel and is tracked by a detective who follows him around the San Polo district, including the Ponte Vinante.
Location 7 / Hotel La Fenice et des Artistes:
Before the climax of the film, both John and Laura Baxter visit the second hotel of the two elderly sisters, the La Fenice et des Artistes, located near to the opera house. John brings the blind sister back from the police station but then leaves the hotel after she suffers a fit, he then catches sight of the diminutive red figure. Laura rushes to the hotel from the police station in search of John, sensing the danger he is in.
Location 8 / Calle Mezzo:
After leaving the old ladies' hotel, Sutherland's character follows the small figure in the red coat (who visually resembles the Baxter's dead daughter) to the narrow street of Calle Mezzo.
Location 9 / Palazzo Grimani:
The climax of the film takes place in the Palazzo Grimani after John Baxter catches up to the figure in the red coat. The Palazzo is derelict in the film, and remained so for years after, but has today been converted into a museum.
Location 10 / San Stae Church:
The funeral at the close of the film takes place in the church of San Stae where a stoney faced Laura Baxter is accompanied by her son, the two old sisters, and Bishop Barbarrigo. The San Stae church was used as an exhibition venue in the last Venice Biennale (2007) as the Swiss pavilion featuring the work of Ugo Rondinone and Urs Fischer.
